I just discovered that my profile page on Twitter has a page rank all of its own. Independently of the Twitter home page which is a page rank 9, my profile page has a page rank of 4. Not bad. And because I didn’t want to think I had a quirk or bug in my Firefox addon, I checked some of my other followers as well. You can Check Your Twitter PageRank using http://prchecker.info
And to my surprise, they too had a page rank. One of my followers who had over 70,000 people following him, had a page rank of 7 while another follower who had over 15,000 people was only ranked a 3. That got me to thinking and wondering how does Google decide on Twitter profile page rank? It certainly has nothing to do with the amount of followers one has. No, the number of followers had nothing to do with how Google scored a Twitter profile. Instead I looked a little deeper and found an article written by the Marketing Professor 6 months ago. Here is a direct quote taken from that page:
”
What is Google Looking For?
What they are looking at specifically on social profile pages like Twitter is up for debate, but if history has taught us anything it likely falls along the lines of:
- Credible inbound links from sources with credible inbound links
- Quality thematic content in their Twitter stream (jumping from dog training to affiliate marketing, to dieting in your twitter stream may get different results than sticking to one theme or topic of discussion… key phrases).
- Outbound links to credible sources.
It wouldn’t surprise me if they are also looking at social measures (retweets, locations, and @ replies).”
The lesson here is relevancy in your tweets. If you do not display any consistency and relevancy in your tweets, then your page rank on Twitter could suffer. Remember, Twitter is a social networking site, designed to get people to interact and engage in conversations. If you’re not doing that, not only are you missing out on the fun, but your status with Google and Twitter is diminishing.

Hey LaTease,
Twitter is certainly a game changer. The pr for my blog is 1 but for Twitter it’s 5. So, I guess that means I’m more important or “relevant” on Twitter (in Google’s mind anyway) Wait, does Google have a mind? Well I guess Twitter has a different mind….Nevermind
(sorry I felt like being silly)
Thanks for the link!

No problem Ileane…but you are right, and relevant all in one. Think about it this way, if your profile is connected to your blog, then your blog will benefit from the PR on Twitter. This is a good thing. I was blown away when I saw the page rank thing.

PR is normally an indication of Back links to a certain page. Seeing taht everyone on Twitter has their own profile page. It would stand to reason that any reference to that home page, via a @username, reply or mention, or even a link to it from your won website or another website will increase the page rank.
How significant is this, I don’t really know. Because ones profile on twitter really has little information. If searching for your profile name, then it would help.
Where it might well help is passing through PageRank through to your site as you have it listed on your profie. But then again, it is only one page, which works out to a very small amount of juice.
But then any little bit helps right. So I checked my Twitter Profile PR, Got a 5. Probably the same as a million others.
Fun excercise nonetheless.

That’s an interesting point. I never checked my profile page pagerank. I just checked it, got 4 points of pagerank.
Btw, for checking pagerank, I suggest seocentro.com . They have the most convenient captcha for a PR checker tool.
Cheers

Well if you have a blog that is a page rank 4 or 5 and you link to your profile it would make it a high page rank Plus twitter is a high page ran itself and it also links to your profile.
They are also a NO FOLLOW community and keep all the page rank. This could be another reason.

Actually, lately I’ve found that Internet simply involves you on been sociable.. If you want to get visitors, talk to others, make more conversations in public places. That’s what Internet about. And I guess, that the future is behind this..
This isn’t strange though

Sorry to wreck your theory – but the reason why twitter profiles have a PR is because your site provides a link to it across all pages so any PR on those internal pages adds to your twitter profile getting PR.
On top of that Twitter maintains a sitemap that ensures that most if not all twitter profiles get indexed (unless you set it to private – in which case it’s a toss up – i’ve seen private twitter accounts get indexed). Anyways other apps and networks routinely scrape the twitter public feed timeline and so you’re unknowingly getting links back to your tweets that way – also remember retweets – someone may be showing their twitter stream including their replies to you and retweets of your messages.
So you accumulate links that way.
Now the sad part is that all that PR goes directly to twitter, and you can’t capitalize off it because all links including the profile link in profiles are no-follow

Yeah, I’ve looked into this one and couldn’t really wrap my mind around it right. Not sure how this will play out later but I’m sure it will have an impact later. We’ll just have to wait and see.

@Robert: this blog has a PR of zero…so I’m sure that the PR isn’t coming from here.
@amelia: I don’t really know the ‘math’ behind the PR on Twitter. I was just proposing a theory here.
@Uttoran: I understand that Twitter is No-follow, but how is it that one of my Tweets made the first page of Google? How does the no-follow concept apply here?
@Issac: thanks for the plug!
@bbrian017: it still doesn’t make sense to me, how did I get a PR 4 on my profile when my blog is a PR zero?
@iWoodpecker: this is starting to sound like an episode on the X-Files TV show.
@seosultan: So you’re saying that my internal pages are ranking higher than my home page and that is the reason why I have a high PR on Twitter? Ok, but how do you know that?
@Tony: I’m not knocking it, just grateful that’s all.
