Proper Internet Marketing Has Its Own Rewards

Birth of the Internet plaque at the w:William_...

Just like anything else in life, to reach a summit you have to start with the first step. In fact, internet marketing is exactly that: choosing a summit that you want to climb, planning the expedition, and executing your plan with consistency until you reach the top. Investing in your internet marketing education is a step toward the top of the summit.

Internet marketing is easy, once you learn the “tricks” that 99% of all others trying to make a buck online don’t know. The first and most important trick is coming up with a winning game plan using a tried and tested strategy.

Let’s discuss the “tricks”, or strategy that will put on a winning trajectory. I’ve broken down internet marketing strategy into the following steps for simplicity:

1. Select Your Target Keyword
You won’t be able to rank well on all keywords at the same time. You need to select one or two single keyword phrases on which to focus your ’sniper bullet’. To see what kind of phrases people are looking for, see the Keyword Suggestion Tool. This is an ‘inventory’ of all keyword searches on Overture.com, and the information is free, so use it!!
2. Establish a Budget
marketing on the internet won’t be free, so you’ll need to decide ahead of time how much money you will be able to spend. As you set out to begin your campaing, you’ll come across a myriad of companies offering to help you drive traffic for a “modest fee”. You can mount a VERY effective campaign yourself for under $200.

Always remember, you don’t want traffic – you want positioning (ranking). When you get to the number 1 position, traffic will come; it’s the law of internet marketing gravity! Your sole focus should be on how to reach the #1 spot, not purchasing clicks.

3. Create Your Websites
This is the step where I lose most people. “Create a web site? I just barely figured out how to use Windows!” Don’t worry – we’ll show you everything you need to do to set up your web sites on a very tight budget.
4. Do Your Homework
Buy yourself a 3-ring binder and start keeping notes like you’ve got a final exam coming up in a few weeks! In your binder you will record your observations, your thoughts, keep a copy of our Internet Marketing Manual handy, sketch out your link strucutres, store printouts of your SEO reports generated by tracking software, and more. If you don’t write down what you’re doing or how your doing it, you’re flying blind!
5. Enact Course Corrections
people wonder how I do so well in the Search Engines. They think I’m some sort of boy-genius that cracked the super-secret Google algorithm. I’m sorry to burst thier bubble, but the real trick to getting to top spots is constant course correction (making LOTS of mistakes and learning from them!). I am always searching the net for Internet Marketing discussion boards and analyzing high ranking pages to figure out how to improve my own sites. Once I find a new ‘trick’, I try it out – not knowing in advance if it will work or not. Over the course of several years, I’ve be able to scratch and claw my way to the top. It was (and still is) a journey and requires attention, intrigue, and curiosity. Rome was not built overnight, and niether is search engine marketing.

Just like anything else that you want, you have to be consistent and work hard at it.  Life has its own rewards and so does proper internet marketing.

Don’t You Want To Catch Google Spiders?

Todays Guest Post is by Patrick Oborn, VP of Marketing at Commission River.

Keyword Density

By Patrick Oborn

When a Google spider comes across your page, one of the main things it is looking for is the total number of words you use (in visible text) and the keywords relating to your web page; or keyword density. In the early days of the internet, webmasters used to fill their pages up with keywords, repeating them over and over and over again, to try to get top search engine positions. Google and the other search engines wised up to this tactic not long after, and created ’spam’ filters, or thresholds, to eliminate sites from their index that violated these limitations. This eliminated a lot of jokers from the playing field and cleared the way for people willing to work and author genuine content to gain ground in the rankings.

OPTIMUM KEYWORD DENSITY

When you author content for your web site, including press releases, help articles, industry analysis, etc. you need to keep keyword density in the back of your mind. You are writing a ‘mad lib’ around your keyword, making sure that you follow these general guidelines:

  1. Use your keyword 1-2 times for every 100 words
  2. Space the keywords out evenly in your text.
  3. Don’t use the keyword twice in the same sentence
  4. Use your keyword in the ‘ALT’ tags of your graphics
  5. Spell-check the viewable text of your web page – Google most likely deducts relevancy points for poorly written content.

These guidelines will give you the ground rules by which you can create quality content that Google will ‘like’, which is the key to increasing your PageRank and ultimately, your ranking in Google.

Here are some keyword optimized examples:

#1

Is it time to look for T1 service? Many people are confused when they consider whether to upgrade from DSL or not. There are several factors to consider when examining your current DSL connection and the possibility of replacing it. For many people the biggest factor is reliability and if reliability is critical to the applications you run over your connection you should seriously consider replacing your DSL connection with a T1 (also known as a DS1). DSL is a quick and cost effective method of acquiring high speed bandwidth however it is not intended to support commercial applications or large numbers of users as are T1 service connections.

#2

T1 pricing has come down dramatically over the past few years as more telecommunications companies are fighting for a place in a smaller market. While many service providers did have room to lose margin, many have come dangerously close to the edge of selling circuits at a loss with overaggressive pricing and incentives. It seems that in the race to the bottom many providers failed to learn the lesson that selling at a loss does not create a long lasting and healthy company no matter how many circuits or widgets you sell. Many companies selling at a loss have already been in bankruptcy and look like they will repeat this exercise as they did not learn from their first go around. In basic terms, solvency of the T1 internet service provider should be a consideration over T1 pricing when looking at great bargains.

StumbleUpon Tips To Success Part 2

Google Buzz

StumbleUpon Toolbar
Image via Wikipedia

Most people don’t know how to take full advantage of all that StumbleUpon traffic has to offer.  If you are going to focus on gaining solid, ‘I will visit your site always’ type of traffic, then StumbleUpon is the web traffic tool you should use.  When going over my Google Analytics report, I realized that StumbleUpon accounts for almost 25% of my traffic.  In a 30 day period, StumbleUpon sent 24.55% and Google (organic) sent 13.81%.  Digg sent 4.53%.

Did you know that even if you get lots of traffic from StumbleUpon in the beginning, that you will continue to get traffic for many months to come?  So for me, StumbleUpon is a viable traffic tool.  Here are 25 more fantastic StumbleUpon tips that will help you bring more success to your blog while enhancing your traffic and Alexa ranking!

Take a look at the 1st 25 StumbleUpon Tips to Success here

26. Stay away from the automated tools if possible, since they will end up causing
problems in some cases, like creating spam-like postings and will give your
pages the overall feel of a robot behind the keyboard instead of a human
being.

27. Make the content more social. Try to achieve a feeling of updating friends and
customers instead of a plain informational page. This will make people stay
interested and want to know more as things with your business changes.

28. Edit your posts often, and have another pair of eyes take a look at them as
well. Sometimes, someone else might catch errors or suggest room for
improvement that you may not be aware of.

29. Blog about your StumbleUpon page. Talk about your page on other websites
and in other places, so more traffic is led there.

30. Choose tags carefully, and only use the ones that have the most impact.

31. You can generate article ideas and brainstorm concepts by buzzing around
the web and finding the hottest topics and other blogs. Take from them as
much inspiration as possible.

32. Try not to use commas and apostrophes in your title. It’s been shown to scare
people away & indicate to them that the topic will be boring.

33. Use the most up to date tracking software possible, so you can get an
accurate hit count and you’ll know how many people have visited the site.

34. Make the most of photos, and strive to use the most visually appealing and
interesting ones you can that are pertaining to your topics.

35. Show off some recent pages on the sidebar, so people can easily see the
other postings you’ve comprised.

36. Relate your articles to common emotions such as happiness, excitement and
even fear to get the point across and garner interest.

37. Diversify. Don’t just stick to one niche topic, but instead broaden your base by
writing a number of different things.

38. Try to be the first to discover new sites and link to them, so that people
consider you a reliable, interesting source.

39. Do not expect success to be overnight. Remember that this website takes
time to build up a base of people and ratings, so allow it to happen naturally.

40. Make sure you comment on other peoples’ pages and review them as well.
This shows you’re an active user who cares about what others are saying.

41. Use StumbleUpon itself as a case study to find the best Internet websites out
there, and then expand on it by making it even better with new links.

42. Humor really does help with this site, so use it freely.

43. Keep your friends list up to date and only use active members as top friends,
so people know you’re paying attention to what is going on.

44. Enable search views. This will help you get more hits in Google and Yahoo.

45. Watch the number of ads that you incorporate and make sure they’re going
with the topic at hand. Poorly blended ads can turn people off and confuse
them.

46. Utilize as many tools and tutorials you can. There are plenty of great tools
and add-ons available, many free of charge, for use with StumbleUpon.

47. Remember that traffic can last a long time. Even if you gain a lot of stumbles
in the beginning and then it dies off, the traffic will still be generated as long
as your page is up. Just make sure it’s current including your contact
information.

48. Be exclusive. Try to feature only certain parts of the bigger picture of your
website. This encourages visitors to actually go there instead.

49. Fill up your page with as much content as possible. Some people might skim
over the page, some might actually sit and read it all and digest it. Either way,
the more information, the better.

50. Branding is essential, so be sure to have a memorable URL or basic title that
people will not forget.

25 More Twitter SEO Tips

Google Buzz
  • Delicious

Image representing TweetDeck as depicted in Cr...
Image via CrunchBase

The other day, I gave you 25 tips to optimize and energize your Twitter marketing efforts.  One thing to keep in mind about Twitter, that it is a two way tool for communicating with like minded people.  Whatever you do, don’t lose sight of communicating with others.  When you stop communicating, you will stop growing and your tweets will lose effectiveness.  I know it seems like a lot to do to master Twitter, but if you can adopt just a few of these tips and do them consistently, you will begin to see your traffic to your blog increase as well as your Twitter followers will grow.

1.  Make Twitter followers feel special by offering “Twitter followers only” specials
and coupons. This encourages new purchases as well as new followers.

2.  Offer more than just Twitter. If you’re so inclined, let people know they can
contact you outside of Twitter via email, text, or even phone. Open up the
lines of communication.

3.  Use behind the scenes tools. Don’t forget to look at metrics and what people
click on, and from where. This is definitely an invaluable tool.

4.  Get into a routine. Figure out a Twitter rhythm, and then stick with it. Once
you get into the flow of posting, your readers will stick with you.

5.  Participate as much as possible. Contribute, and be a part of others’ Twitter
pages as well. Don’t just stand in the shadows, or you might lose followers.

6.  Mix it up. Don’t just use Twitter as a promotional site. Try to keep a dialogue
going, let people know what’s happening, and other things aside from overpromotion.

7.  Partner up. It can never hurt to form a partnership with some of your fellow
tweeters. Come up with a network within a network, and you’ll be amazed at
the results.

8.  Realize there are other avenues, and then expand on them. While Twitter is
great, don’t neglect your other social media sites, blogs, or your own website!

9.  Take out the trash. You can always “unfollow” people who are not posting
positive comments, other companies who spam you, or “junk” Twitter friends.
Don’t be afraid to clean house every once in a while.

10.  Future tweets reap sweet treats. You can now use tools that allow you to type
up your tweets in advance so you can plan ahead, and then they will post to
your account when you’re ready. A great time saver!

11.  Automated Tweets can help you prioritize. There are tools where you can
select certain topics or sub-topics for notification, so that the topics important
to you will be delivered daily, or however you like. I use HootsuiteSeesmic and TweetDeck are also good tools.

12.  Use the advanced search to your benefit. Twitter and other tools related to it
have advanced search options, so you can really find that niche poster or
specified topic that you’re interested in.

13.  Use links. Never mention a resource without linking if at all possible, this way
people trust your opinions because they’re backed up with real links.

14.  Try not to abbreviate too much. While Twitter only allows 140 characters and
that can be tough to express yourself, try to avoid too many abbreviations.

15.  Avoid offending people by using bad language. While this seems obvious, a
lot of people get carried away on Twitter. As a business, you want avoid foul
language.

16.  Be as thorough as you can when explaining who you are, what your company
does, and what you have to offer.

17.  Stay away from arguments if possible. Some people may get obnoxious or
belligerent on Twitter. Try to avoid arguments by just ignoring them, otherwise
you can dig your own hole and make yourself look bad.

18.  Don’t be boring. Do not talk about what you had for breakfast or the weather.
Keep your posts fresh, fun, and interesting.

19.  Counts don’t count. Do not worry about how many followers you have. This
can distract you from the quality of your posts.

20.  Refuse spammers. Keep spammers and spam emailers out of your Twitter
feed or else they can ruin your page.

21.  Ask and ye shall receive. Don’t be afraid to ask others to retweet your tweets,
or to link you to their blogs, etc. Most people will oblige if you just ask.

22.  Open up to your audience. Try to loosen up and have your other Tweeters do
the same by being honest, intimate, and real with your readers. People will
really enjoy the candid postings and stay enthralled.

23. Offer downloadable material. You can always offer a PDF download or other
material on your Twitter page for people to look at and get more information.

24. Use SEO to your advantage, and do not forget to implement important
keywords in the Twitter posts.

25.  Do not stop abruptly. If you have to go on vacation, make sure you have a sitin
tweeter to fill your post so your readers stay tuned.

Your Copy Sucks, And Your Traffic Stinks!

Google Buzz
  • Delicious

How to make your copy sing to the visitors of your site...

How to make your copy sing!

One of the most important reasons as to why copywriting for the web is different is that the mindset of those who are going to be reading it is different.  More often than not, most web pages will be found via a search engine. This is very significant, as it means that the person reading your site has been looking either for you or someone like you. So that puts them in control. This is because they will be focused on finding a particular product, service or piece of information.  So anyone visiting your site for the first time and has found it via a search engine will have a few questions in mind. “Have I come to the right place?” also “Will I find what I’m looking for at this page or site?” Finally, they would be asking themselves “Do I feel able that I can complete the task at this point?”

So what is vital is that you answer these questions in both your headline, and any sub-headlines you may have. It needs to be able to secure a response from this first time visitor immediately. In order for this to happen, your writing needs to provide answers so that the visitor knows exactly what they are looking for. What is important when writing any copy for the web is that you reassure any visitors that they are in the right place, and that they should continue to read on.

Why Every Visitor Counts

If you fail to plan, then you are likely to fail in your endeavor of producing great copy. If you wish to achieve your goals, it is important to gather all the facts.  First, you should anticipate the users’ of your sites questions. Normally, there are four questions that a user will have that will need to be answered.

1. What am I doing here?

2. How do I do it?

3. What is in it for me?

4. Where do I go from here?

So if your site’s design and navigation can not provide an obvious answer to these questions, then you should look at using copy in order to explain them. It is important that the answers to these questions should be obvious to all your users, and not just those visiting your site for the first time.

What is important to remember is that half the visitors to a site will not try to bother with working things out for themselves, and the other half may not even succeed.

Next, when planning, focus on your core audience. Remember, you will not be able to reach everyone, so make sure that the copy you produce addresses your site’s most important visitors directly. So, spend time explaining what the site can do for them in particular. If you want to make it more effective, then do not use words which would only be looked at by people you do not need.

However, if you are targeting more than one type of visitor to your site, then make sure that you can direct them to different pages. What you should remember is that a visitor will go somewhere else if they do not feel your site has something of value to offer to them in particular.  So when providing them with facts, let the facts speak for themselves.

Are Twitter and Facebook Links Any Good?

Google Buzz
  • Delicious

By that I mean, the no-follow aspect of Twitter and Facebook. Links from Twitter and Facebook are treated the same as any other link. If it is a reputable link, then it will gain you some link juice. However, the issue comes where some profiles on social networks are not public. If your profile on Facebook is not public, and can not be crawled by the search engines, then definitely you are not getting any link juice from it.

However, if your profile is public and the search engines can crawl your profile, then your links can be used to assist in the backlink building for your site.

Here is a video produced by Google’s Matt Cutts (with a new hair cut) explaining Twitter, Facebook links as well as .edu and .gov backlinks.

  1. Read this post by Larry Brauner and set your marketing agenda.  Find out what it is you want to accomplish.  Are you seeking product longevity or brand longevity.  There is a difference.8 Reasons Why You Might NOT Be Promoting Yourself Enough
  2. Pick the social media that is suitable for your business.  If its Facebook, then use the groups and Fan Page feature to market and brand yourself.  Branding yourself is more important that promoting your products and services.  People buy from people, not from institutions or companies.  In the world of social networking success, you must establish yourself as a real person that your readers can identify with.
  3. Bookmark your posts.  Submit your blog posts to Digg, Delicious, Yahoo! Buzz Up and more.  If you’re using Wordpress there are many social bookmarking plugins that are available to you.  Make sure you utilize them.  Doing this exposes your content to a wider audience than just friends on Facebook or Twitter.
  4. Use your web analytics program to determine where your traffic is coming from.  You can also discover what posts are favorites among your readers this way.  Maximize this information by creating new blog posts in that niche and by uncovering new readers.
  5. When using Twitter, be human.  People want two way communication not just random links and verbiage without interaction.  Keep in mind you’re using ’social’ media, and being social means communicating, interacting and engaging.
  6. If you use Fan Pages on Facebook, ask your fans what they like about your product.  Get their feedback in order to improve your product or service and to manage your brand.
  7. Know who your audience is.  If your product or niche is mommy bloggers, then search for mommy bloggers and speak to that audience.  Think of online communication the way you would if you were seeking an audience offline—look for those who would benefit from your product or service and then go after them!

Part of getting traffic to your site is knowing who you are targeting to.  Take some time to focus on the types of readers you want.  Spending a little time doing the little things will amount to big results later on.
