Everybody loves distractions. And just like monkeys, perhaps you get this dopamine shot every time something pulls you in another direction. Do you want to be more efficient and productive at work? There is no secret formula here—just one step at a time. And stop multitasking- this is just another type of distraction. Here are tips to help you keep on track.
Start working backwards—starting from goals, milestones and tasks.
Listing down the task ‘launch business site’ on your list is a way to never get it finished. Try to break down work into smaller loads until you come up with tasks which can be done in just a few hours.
Multitasking won’t work.
Switching from one task to another doesn’t work. Changing tasks for more than ten times a day will make you duller than being stoned. And when you are stoned, IQ drops around five points. But during multitasking, it drops at around ten points.
Try to be militant on removing distractions.
Go lock your office door. Turn off your mobile, instant messaging and email. You can also set your email to offline or turn off your Internet. Find a solemn area and focus on finishing a single task.
Schedule all your mails.
Choose a specific time during the day to use your mail. Constantly checking your mail will create a lot of noise and eventually, kill your productivity.
Try to use your phone.
Emails are not great for conversations. Do not respond more than twice to one email. Instead, go and pick up the phone.
Work on the agenda.
Do not let something else set your day. A lot of people dive right into their emails and freak out. You may end in inbox-zero but not accomplishing anything. As soon as you wake up, hydrate yourself with water, eat a full breakfast to replenish glucose and then set priorities for the rest of the day.
Try working in 60 to 90 minute intervals.
The brain uses more glucose compared to other parts of the body. After around 60-90 minutes, you may feel so burned out already. Take a quick break. You can get up for a snack, a walk or do something different just to recharge your brain.
