How Social Networking Can Save Education

Social Networking sites like Twitter and Facebook have become a part of the mainstream media these days.  Numerous reports appear daily on how the integration and use of social networking is as much a part of our lives as drinking water is.  Whether it is a story about Conan O’Brien picking a Michigan woman to follow on Twitter, or how the state of Georgia is restricting sex offenders from using Facebook, social networking is here to stay.

But, what really fascinates me more and more, is how people are actually using social networks.  It’s like social networks are replacing other forms of communication.  Maybe because its a quicker, more broad way of reaching a huge group of people.  Take a look at one of my peers and what he accomplished in just a few short hours using social networking. Dear Blog Engage Members, Can We Make History?

I’ve been thinking about social networking as an educational vehicle.

For me, I’m really interested in advancing the use of social networking in United States public schools, more specifically inner city students.  Because I am a product of the Detroit Public School system, my heart is anchored and focused on those students first.

Maybe its because the Detroit Public School system has a 25% graduation rate and is the nation’s worst performing urban school system (The blogprof.blogspot.com).  I have a crazy idea that involves social networking and education.  Hey, right now a school system such as Detroit’s is tanking fast, and needs something crazy and out of the box to save it.

Since social networking is about people and getting as many of them together to unite for one cause, I know that Detroit students could benefit from the use of social networking to further their education.

For instance, if Detroit Public School students had access to the internet, had computers to use at home, then they could integrate Facebook Fan Pages as a great social studies, economic/business and english writing exercises.  The educationally archaic method of teaching students in inner cities don’t work, just take a look at the graduation rates.

Our kids today are technologically advanced, thus they are bored with coming to class and opening a book.  Lets send our kids to school and have them turn on a computer.  This way we teach them how to do by giving hands on examples.  Researching a topic in American History or even Economics is way more fun when we teach students how to find the information, what sites are credible to use for research, then teach them how to utilize Word and Excel to enhance their reports.

ALL kids like mental challenges.  Boredom is a great dream killer.  No wonder many inner city kids decide to join gangs, sell dope, or just kill one another.  Its way more exciting than going to school and opening a dusty old school book that doesn’t even show any of the last 3 U.S. Presidents.

We need to change our thinking if we are going to reach our kids today.  Social Networking is one way to do it.  Parents buy their kids cellphones that can access Twitter, Facebook and MySpace all the time.  Let’s make good use of these skills and integrate these sites into the educational system.

Its worth a try, anything is because right now our kids are losing, the dropout rate is ridiculous, all while we complain about higher taxes, health care reform, whether a black U.S. President is failing the black race.

None of this will matter if our children, our future turn out to be as dumb as a box of rocks.  Can anyone spell s-l-a-v-e-r-y? That’s what happens when a society has no knowledge or makes use of it, that society becomes enslaved by a more superior culture or race.

What are your thoughts?  I’d love to hear them….leave a comment below or continue the conversation on Twitter or Facebook.

FORMER PORN WRITER GOES LEGIT

Google Buzz
  • Delicious

Bejeweled Deluxe Version
Image via Wikipedia

As you probably know there are lots of ways to make money online.  I have always been a writer, so in the beginning I wrote porn and made a pretty decent living.  I wrote short erotica stories for adult webmasters for about 3 years.  The money was good, but it left me morally poor.

Because I wanted to continue writing, I started some blogs and began looking at ways to monetize them.  I began writing posts for PayPerPost, Triond and Associated Content.  I write for these three companies because they are trustworthy and the posts are fun to create.  From time to time you may see ’sponsored post’ as a category on this blog, because its how I make my living.

KITTY PORN

I don’t promote the MLM programs any longer or write porn, however I write and I promote games for a couple CPA Networks.  I work full time making a living online.  That’s why you will almost always see me on Twitter and Facebook (I have a smartphone that keeps me totally connected as well!)

The banners you see along the side of my page to the left are the games I promote.  At first, I didn’t want to promote them, that is until last month when I saw how profitable the games could be.  A few of them are also on Facebook, which really is an excellent way to utilize these types of campaigns.

From time to time if you are my Twitter follower, StumbleUpon friend or Facebook friend, I may send you a link to play one of my games.  Or I might send you the link to become a fan of my Bejeweled 2 Fan Page, Fiesta Epic Battle, Second Life or any of my other games.  Please join in if you like games.  We have great conversations (the fans and I) and fun times sharing our scores, tips and tricks.

Tell me, what way do you make money online?  Do you work full time from home?

25 StumbleUpon Mysteries Unveiled

Google Buzz
  • Delicious

StumbleUpon Toolbar
Image via Wikipedia

What is StumbleUpon?  Here is the Wikipedia definition:

StumbleUpon is an Internet community that allows its users to discover and rate Web pages, photos, and videos. It is a personalized recommendation engine which uses peer and social-networking principles.

Web pages are presented when the user clicks the “Stumble!” button on the browser’s toolbar. StumbleUpon chooses which Web page to display based on the user’s ratings of previous pages, ratings by his/her friends, and by the ratings of users with similar interests. Users can rate or choose not to rate any Web page with a thumbs up or thumbs down, and clicking the Stumble button resembles “channel-surfing” the Web. StumbleUpon also allows their users to indicate their interests from a list of nearly 500 topics to produce relevant content for the user.[4] There is also one-click blogging built in as well.”

For Bloggers, StumbleUpon is an excellent, sticky form of traffic.  Using StumbleUpon fosters real relationships and the community is very reciprocal.  By that, if you stumble someone, you will get that amount of stumbles in return.  And the traffic and rankings you receive from StumbleUpon can earn you top rankings in Google.  I’ve been using StumbleUpon for a couple of years now and have watched it go through many changes to benefit the users.  So, I’ve compiled a list of 25 mysteries that should help you when using SU.  Tomorrow I will add another 25 to the list.  Enjoy!

1. Make sure your website is up to par. Since people will be “stumbling upon”
your site, you want to make sure it looks good as soon as they click on the
link.

2. Just like Twitter, StumbleUpon is a social networking website, so be sure to
get as many contacts and networking friends as possible.

3. Complete your profile as thoroughly as possible before linking. This way,
when people click on your information, they get an idea of who you are or
who your business is.

4. Cover as many bases as possible in the profile. Try not to leave too many
stones unturned, so people know exactly what you’re about from the get go.
5. Leave links on as many sites as possible. You want people to link right back
to you, so link up!

6. Be careful where you stumble. Remember that people can see the path of
links that you’ve followed, and they will have gotten to you by following a
particular path. Don’t link to places or people you do not want to be
associated with, or you will turn visitors off.

7. Utilize those keywords! Use an SEO service or writer to help you place the
best and most effective keywords possible. This is truly the key to getting your
information stumbled upon.

8. Tag the most essential elements. StumbleUpon uses tags, which are a lot like
keywords. Be sure to tag your site using the most effective, power packing
tags possible. Try to pick nouns and use ones that will pique peoples’ interest
immediately. While you must use one topic on the site, you can use multiple
tags and change them up as needed.

9. Use your friends for help. The website has a feature that lets you contact your
friends and inform them of your topic. They will see a notification on their
toolbar. While this is fun and a good way to gather up more people, do not
abuse it or else you may end up annoying people rather than informing them.

10. Do not focus so much on becoming a huge “stumbler”, but rather focus on the
quality of your topics and posts. If you worry too much about your followers or
your rating, you may end up neglecting the content, which is really what’s
important.

11. Decide right away that you’re going to be an important part of the
StumbleUpon web community, and then stick with it. Feeble posters or people
who are fly by night are easy to detect, and most people will stay away from
that.

12. Review and rate as many others’ sites as possible, so that you are an active
member and not just standing on the sidelines.

Have a sip of StumbleUpon

Friend me on StumbleUpon, I'm marketingstar

13. Try to create long posts with as many links as possible. This garners you
more content, more referrals, and more chances to get noticed.

14. Try not to “kill” your page with ads or spam. This is usually an automatic turn
off for people who might stumble upon your page. Keep those pesky ads at
bay if at all possible!

15. Think about your target audience. Then, create customized content just for
them. By putting information out there that caters to your audience and your
customer base, you will get solid followers who should turn into sales or
referrals.

16. Make sure you write a captivating and effective title, and a good introductory
paragraph. Most people look at the title first and foremost, so make sure it is
one that will grab their attention and make them want to read more.

17. Thank the people who stumble to you. This has a very positive effect and
usually gets people to recommend your page to others.

18. Join communities that are in relation to your business. You just might learn
something, and by getting involved in communities with like-minded people,
you might discover some really useful contacts.

19. Keep it fresh. Try to post new articles daily, if not weekly. You want the
content to stay fresh and informative, and make sure your readers stick
around.

20. Go for the gold. Try to get your StumbleUpon page featured on the site. If you
get to this level, you’ll be amazed at how many more contacts and thumbs up
you will get.

21. Multimedia helps, so integrate video and audio as much as you can.

22. Do not just link to other sites’ home page. Instead, link to specific pages that
feature pictures, articles, or other things that are more specific to your topic.

23. Mention StumbleUpon in your postings. True followers of the site really love it,
so by mentioning it somehow within your topic, you’re making people feel right
at home and comfortable.

24. Make sure the people who stumble end up being regular visitors or
customers. You can do this by adding an RSS button at the bottom of our
page, an email subscription link, or any other method that will bring interested
people in even closer.

25. Be interesting without selling. I other words, you want the content to sound
good and thorough but not like a sales letter or an infomercial.

25 More Twitter SEO Tips

Google Buzz
  • Delicious

Image representing TweetDeck as depicted in Cr...
Image via CrunchBase

The other day, I gave you 25 tips to optimize and energize your Twitter marketing efforts.  One thing to keep in mind about Twitter, that it is a two way tool for communicating with like minded people.  Whatever you do, don’t lose sight of communicating with others.  When you stop communicating, you will stop growing and your tweets will lose effectiveness.  I know it seems like a lot to do to master Twitter, but if you can adopt just a few of these tips and do them consistently, you will begin to see your traffic to your blog increase as well as your Twitter followers will grow.

1.  Make Twitter followers feel special by offering “Twitter followers only” specials
and coupons. This encourages new purchases as well as new followers.

2.  Offer more than just Twitter. If you’re so inclined, let people know they can
contact you outside of Twitter via email, text, or even phone. Open up the
lines of communication.

3.  Use behind the scenes tools. Don’t forget to look at metrics and what people
click on, and from where. This is definitely an invaluable tool.

4.  Get into a routine. Figure out a Twitter rhythm, and then stick with it. Once
you get into the flow of posting, your readers will stick with you.

5.  Participate as much as possible. Contribute, and be a part of others’ Twitter
pages as well. Don’t just stand in the shadows, or you might lose followers.

6.  Mix it up. Don’t just use Twitter as a promotional site. Try to keep a dialogue
going, let people know what’s happening, and other things aside from overpromotion.

7.  Partner up. It can never hurt to form a partnership with some of your fellow
tweeters. Come up with a network within a network, and you’ll be amazed at
the results.

8.  Realize there are other avenues, and then expand on them. While Twitter is
great, don’t neglect your other social media sites, blogs, or your own website!

9.  Take out the trash. You can always “unfollow” people who are not posting
positive comments, other companies who spam you, or “junk” Twitter friends.
Don’t be afraid to clean house every once in a while.

10.  Future tweets reap sweet treats. You can now use tools that allow you to type
up your tweets in advance so you can plan ahead, and then they will post to
your account when you’re ready. A great time saver!

11.  Automated Tweets can help you prioritize. There are tools where you can
select certain topics or sub-topics for notification, so that the topics important
to you will be delivered daily, or however you like. I use HootsuiteSeesmic and TweetDeck are also good tools.

12.  Use the advanced search to your benefit. Twitter and other tools related to it
have advanced search options, so you can really find that niche poster or
specified topic that you’re interested in.

13.  Use links. Never mention a resource without linking if at all possible, this way
people trust your opinions because they’re backed up with real links.

14.  Try not to abbreviate too much. While Twitter only allows 140 characters and
that can be tough to express yourself, try to avoid too many abbreviations.

15.  Avoid offending people by using bad language. While this seems obvious, a
lot of people get carried away on Twitter. As a business, you want avoid foul
language.

16.  Be as thorough as you can when explaining who you are, what your company
does, and what you have to offer.

17.  Stay away from arguments if possible. Some people may get obnoxious or
belligerent on Twitter. Try to avoid arguments by just ignoring them, otherwise
you can dig your own hole and make yourself look bad.

18.  Don’t be boring. Do not talk about what you had for breakfast or the weather.
Keep your posts fresh, fun, and interesting.

19.  Counts don’t count. Do not worry about how many followers you have. This
can distract you from the quality of your posts.

20.  Refuse spammers. Keep spammers and spam emailers out of your Twitter
feed or else they can ruin your page.

21.  Ask and ye shall receive. Don’t be afraid to ask others to retweet your tweets,
or to link you to their blogs, etc. Most people will oblige if you just ask.

22.  Open up to your audience. Try to loosen up and have your other Tweeters do
the same by being honest, intimate, and real with your readers. People will
really enjoy the candid postings and stay enthralled.

23. Offer downloadable material. You can always offer a PDF download or other
material on your Twitter page for people to look at and get more information.

24. Use SEO to your advantage, and do not forget to implement important
keywords in the Twitter posts.

25.  Do not stop abruptly. If you have to go on vacation, make sure you have a sitin
tweeter to fill your post so your readers stay tuned.

Them Crooked Vultures Created A Twitter Storm

Google Buzz
  • Delicious

TwitArt.
Image via Wikipedia

Yes they have,  if you check what was trending the last 24 hours on Twitter, you will see the band Them Crooked Vultures at the top.  But, how can you get your tweets to be top trending?  I know, secretly you also want to be like Them Crooked Vultures so you can ride the wave of a Twitter blizzard.  You desperately want your tweets to turn into a viral snow storm so that Yahoo, Bing and Google will pick them up and make you king for a day.  Well, if you put into action the following list, its all but guaranteed you’ll create a Twitter storm!

1. Network with noteworthy business associates, competitors, and peers. You
don’t have to simply befriend every person you can that requests you or vice
versa on Twitter. Instead, choose your networking buddies carefully. Look for
fellow executives or business owners who work within your particular niche.
Then, follow their progress, look for advice, and of course, throw in some of
your own two cents as well. By befriending people who are in the same line of
work as you, you’ll get an insider’s look at how their successes compare to
yours.

2. Update your audience fairly regularly, but don’t over load them. A lot of people
are most likely interested in what you have to say, otherwise they probably
wouldn’t have added you to begin with. This means you should be updating
them on a fairly regular basis so they can keep up with what’s happening in
your world or your business’ world. On the other hand, you don’t want to
overload people so much that the feel of your Twitter site feels “spammy” and
they turn away. Try to maintain the balance between good updating and
overwhelming people with insignificant updates.

3. Use Twitterfeed to help people stay updated. Twitterfeed is basically the
website’s answer to an RSS feed, and it’s a great way to automatically keep
your followers updated without them checking your page too often. It also
allows things to be updated on their own, so you don’t have to spend extra
time telling everyone you have an updated; it’s all done for you.

4. Use Twitter at conferences and trade shows. When you’re out and about
networking in the REAL world, don’t forget to use Twitter then as an
opportunity to update your customers and peers on what you’re seeing and
doing. This shows them that you’re being proactive and it’s a lot of fun as well.
You can tell them some funny things you might be seeing at the trade show,
or maybe inform them of an interesting vendor you’ve hooked up with. By
sharing your experiences as you go along, you’re garnering more interest in
what is happening with your business.

5. Keep an eye on what people are saying. Don’t forget that Twitter, like any
other virtual conversation, is a two-way street. Pay attention to what other
members are saying, and see if they’re Twittering about you. If they are, you
might want to use that as an opportunity to either thank them for a nice
compliment, or to make good if they are posting a complaint. Remember that
you’re never 100% safe from someone who might try to talk negatively about
you, your website, or anything else on Twitter. Be sure to use this to your
advantage in a diplomatic way.

6. Display your Twitter profile on business cards, your website, and in email
signatures. Remind people in other ways that you’re on Twitter. Some clients
and customers might not know this until you pass the information along. Get a
nice snapshot of your Twitter home page and then display it along with a link
to the Twitter page on your actual website. Include the page’s URL in email
signatures and you can even print this on a business card if you like.

7. Make Twitter another home hub. Use Twitter to display your business growth,
charts, statistics, and other factual data. This way, people who prefer to watch
what’s happening with you on Twitter have the same basic information and
access as those who usually just visit your website.

8. Promote Events. Remember to not just update people on the comings and
goings of your business, but also to get them hyped up for any big events you
may have coming up. This can be anything from an appearance at a trade
show to a huge seasonal sale or a launching of a new product. Always keep
Twitter in mind when it comes to these updates, and remember that it can

9. Filter your traffic to other places. You can use Twitter to also steer people to
other resources that you use for marketing such as a blog page or website
updates. The exchange of information through Twitter can go both ways, so
keep that in mind. It’s a good way to get others moving to different resources
that you have available that they might not know about.

10. Find a cool template that says who you are as company. Twitter now allows
users to customize the look of their home page. Use something individual and
creative as your Twitter page. This can be the same graphics you use on your
website, a company logo, or something you’ve customized just for Twitter. No
matter what it is, make sure it’s appealing to the eyes and does not look too
“busy.”

11. Why email when you can Twitter? Don’t send out short and sweet emails to
your subscribers. Most people who sign up for emails from companies expect
a monthly and at worst weekly update that is chock full of information. They
don’t want to open a short email with not much to go on. Save this for Twitter,
where people hunger for the short sentences and blurbs. Then, you can
compile all of these over the span of a month or so into one email for the
others.

12. Use a cool “follow me” graphic. There are now hundreds of different follow me
graphics to choose from that will grab peoples’ attention. You can even
customize your graphic if you want to, so people will see something distinctive
about your page. Just like the template, the follow me graphics get you notice
and entice people to want more information, so make sure this graphic is
done well.

13. Keep it casual. Remember that Twitter is a social site, so it’s got more of a
casual feel than some websites might. Make sure the posts are generally
light, with a touch of humor otherwise you might lose your core audience. The
purpose of following others on Twitter is so that it’s entertaining. If you post
too serious or heavy posts, it might turn some readers off.

14. Sub-divide your Twitter page. You don’t have to just have ONE company
page. Instead, try to come up with a page for all of your staff. This way, your
customers get to know others on the team. It also adds a bit of diversity for
the business, and gives people a cast of characters to follow instead of a
faceless, nameless company. It also entices people to follow more so they
stay connected to both you and your business.

15. Incorporate video into your Twitter page. Many people may not know that now
Twitter allows for multimedia additions, so feel free to include video plug-ins
on your page. This makes it more exciting, and people will want to follow your
postings more closely if there’s video included.

16. Divide and conquer. You can actually separate your followers into different
groups. This is actually quite useful, especially if some people are customers,
some are peers, some are competitors, and some are personal contacts. This
way, you only update the people who care about certain things with particular
tweets, while the others don’t have to see those, and vice versa. It’s a good
way to hone in on your audience’s interests.

17. Itunes, Iphones, and Twitter: There are plenty of new tools available right now
that incorporated into Apple’s applications. This makes your Twitter updates
available to busy people who are on the go, and for people who access your
page solely on their Iphones.

18. It’s not just for Iphones any more: Aside from the Iphone specific applications,
there are plenty of other mobile Twitter-related apps out there you can use.
Not only can your users download these apps and use them on their cell
phones, but you can do the same and follow your friends and cohorts as well.

19. Inform your customers of stock status. Twitter also has tons of great features
and plug-ins that will notify your customers when certain items you carry are
in stock, and when they go on sale. This is an excellent way to notify people
so they can make it purchase. This is also helpful for you, so you can get a
jump start on your suppliers and what they are offering for you.

20. Map it out. Google Maps and many other map websites now integrate with
Twitter. This can be fun to show your followers where you’re traveling, or just
to show them where your business is located. It’s also handy so that you can
find posters and look up where they are located.

21. Digging for other blogs through Twitter: Twitter is a great way to get some
insight into other blogging websites such as Digg and other related sources.
This can be a good way to not only find other peoples’ blogs, but link to them
and inform other people about their content. By doing a search you can find
tons of great blogs on the web that can be linked to your Twitter.

22. Contests are tons of fun on Twitter. Host an impromptu giveaway contest on
Twitter. You can do this every day, every week, monthly, whatever you
choose. It’s a great way to get all of your followers to stay interested and
engaged, and freebies are always a guarantee of new contacts.

23. Ask for feedback. Don’t just tell everyone what you’re doing via Twitter, try to
ask everyone for their opinion or feedback. It’s a good way to start a dialogue
and open up a forum for new suggestions and changes that can be made.

24. Colors matter. Think about the color scheme of your Twitter page, and try to
make it appealing and something that will fit your business’ niche. For
example, a NASCAR Twitter page wouldn’t use a pink and red color scheme!
Choose colors that fit your message and your style.

25. Fonts are Important, too. The fonts you use for the main Twitter page should
also fit the theme of the business or page.

Going Underground With Sub-Digger Plus

Google Buzz
  • Delicious

The Digg Bar just wasn’t working for me. It was causing emotional angst in my online endeavors. Surely, getting top news fast should not cause stress. So the first thing I did was to disable the Digg Bar. I needed a replacement, because I had worthy friends and associates who sometimes relied upon my votes, and also to satisfy my need to get the news. That’s when I discovered Sub Digger Plus.

Sub-Digger Plus Number of Unread Stories

Sub Digger Plus is a time saver just like HootSuite is a timesaver for Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook. Now you can browse through your Digg friends’ submissions easily and quickly using the Sub Digger Plus Submission Bar. This bar has a next button that takes you to the next story of all your friends’ subs automatically. You are able to see the title, topic and submitter of the story just from the bar.

Sub-Digger Plus

Don’t want to look at the submissions in this manner? Then you can change it to the List View on Sub Digger Plus. There you can view all your friends’ submissions in a list format. You have the ability to sort and filter the submissions using List View and it is so easy on the eye. Using Sub Digger Plus, I can Digg from submission to submission in more than half the time.

Sub-Digger Plus Click Next Story

I should let you know, Sub-Digger Plus was not created by Digg, hopefully the powers that be won’t try to delete your Digg account for using it because this tool is so much fun, and it is FREE! Its really simple to use, and it makes Digg-ing fun again.

Number of Diggs by User

All you need to do to use Sub-Digger Plus is enter in your Digg user name and start digging. It works with Firefox, Internet Explorer and Chrome browsers. After you enter your user name, you will see a toolbar at the bottom of the page that displays the title of the submission, the date it was submitted and the avatar of the person who submitted it.

Mark Stories Read on Sub-Digger Plus

When you use the List View function, you can sort submissions by date, Diggs, Title, Submitter, Topic and Read. Here is where the power of personalization comes in. Any of these functions can also be re-sorted in ascending or descending order. Like I said before, Sub-Digger Plus makes Digg fun again.

You can also display the number of unread stories and click on a particular user name to get all the stories submitted by that user. For me, Sub-Digger Plus is worth the time and worth a try. If you like Digging and want to enhance your experience, you should give this sure fire tool a try.

Living Life 140 Characters of Less

Google Buzz
  • Delicious

Twitter is based around a very simple concept, and once you’ve
grasped that concept you’ll be well away. Some people believe
Twitter has too many limitations, but thats what makes it a creative promotional challenge.

The more you learn about Twitter, the more you will realize

Twitter: 140 Characters of Less

Twitter: 140 Characters of Less

why its called micro-blogging. It combines
all the best parts of blogging with a wide level of interactivity with people.
And when it is used properly it can become
one of your best marketing weapons.

But there are other ways to start using Twitter. You don’t just
have to tell people whats happening, you will discover that
people also ask questions, and look for advice and even network
with other like minded people with the intention of forming a
business relationship later on.

You only have to write 140 characters to tell
people what’s happening.  There is also the possibility of getting more followers to a well
maintained and thought out stream of tweets because it’s short and sweet.

Getting people to follow you is like leaving a trail of breadcrumbs like Hansel and Gretel did.
First off, they won’t follow you if they don’t know you’re
there, so make sure you utilize the many widgets and badges available to promote your profile.
When you use widgets and badges, you can opt to include your followers tweets as well.
Another cool way to make friends by promoting your friends tweets.

Use your profile link in forums, at the bottom of emails, everywhere.  Let everyone know
you’re on Twitter by promoting it proudly, you’ll be glad you did!
The more people who know about your tweets, the better
the chances are of some of them deciding to follow you.
